Home-grown project started by kids aims to benefit EJK orphans

By: Nirva Delacruz

Who says kids are too young to care? This fledgling group was born in the minds and hearts of a 9-year old and a 7-year old who were coming up with ideas for their financial literacy curriculum.

“We wanted them to be able to see where their donations were going and not let it just be a nameless, faceless donation… Our mission is to provide financial assistance to the beneficiaries of Program Paghilom, ensuring they have access to education, healthcare, and a nurturing environment, empowering them to build a brighter future,” shared Welly Villalva, the mom of 8-year old Yana and 9-year old Manolo who started the initiative in 2023 from their home in Makati City.

Kids fundraising for other kids

According to Villava, she and her children first learned about the struggles of EJK orphans of Program Paghilom from Fr. Flavie Villanueva, SVD. She said it was easy to choose the Paghilom orphans as beneficiaries because they had personally seen the quality of care given to the homeless beneficiaries of the Arnold Janssen Kalinga Center.

We wanted them to be able to see where their donations were going and not let it just be a nameless, faceless donation…

Currently, Akbay Lakbay raises funds to provide financial assistance to help cover educational expenses, transportation and food allowances of some 16 EJK orphans under Program Paghilom. It also conducts non-academic development programs to support the overall well-being of the beneficiaries.

‘Break the cycle of poverty’

Through Akbay Lakbay’s efforts, Villava shared, they aim “to break the cycle of poverty and provide a solid foundation for the orphaned children.” She said she hopes the support given the orphans can help them become productive members of society who make a positive impact on their communities.

“Ultimately, our hope is that they become lifelong learners who make valuable contributions to society as a whole,” she added.
